1.2.2.2 Pythagoras' Theorem

It is not actually certain if a person called Pythagoras ever lived. There was a sect called the Pythagoreans who lived in Southern Italy and had many strange beliefs one of which was to abstain from beans!!!

However the famous theorem which bears his name was first recorded by them.

This stated that : the sum of the squares on the smaller sides of a right angled triangle equals the square on the largest side ( the hypotenuse )

This was well accepted but had unintended consequences
